    Ideal batteries for wearables

    18. January 2018

VARTA Microbattery Presents the Latest Battery Generation at the Wearable Technologies Conference in Munich

They can be worn close to the body, on the body or even in the body – wearables are being used in more and more applications, and becoming increasingly commonplace. The development of this global growth segment is inconceivable without powerful, reliable batteries. The batteries directly determine the performance and continuous use times. At the same time, they need to meet increasingly demanding requirements while becoming ever smaller, lighter and more powerful.

At the Wearable Technologies Conference in Munich on January 30-31, VARTA Microbattery will present the leading edge of what is possible in this sector today and tomorrow. Visitors can look forward to concise, “elevator pitch”-paced product presentations by VARTA’s experts.

At the Wearable Technologies Conference, VARTA Microbattery will be showcasing its CoinPower series. This product line comprises the CP 1254 A3 and CP 1654 A3, along with the CP 1454 A3. With a capacity of 85 mAh, a diameter of 14.1 millimeters and a weight of just 2.4 grams, this microbattery meets customer demands for increased capacity and smaller size. VARTA recently increased the capacity of types CP 1254 and CP 1654. “Their compact and stable cylindrical design, coupled with a high energy density and exceptional performance, make the CoinPower cells a perfect power source for all wearables and hearables,” explains Herbert Schein, CEO of VARTA AG. “Rapid recharging, high resilience and a sturdy build round out the profile of the CoinPower series.”

High-capacity button cells also offer further advantages, including simple insertion in user devices – with virtually no risk of damage thanks to their strong and stable stainless-steel housing – and exacting precision in the mechanical design of the battery configuration. The cells’ strong steel housing also makes them highly resistant to shock and vibration.

The potential applications for the tiny power packs are innumerable in the rapidly expanding areas of Bluetooth headphones – not to mention fitness trackers and other wearables. To date, the CoinPower series has generated multiple patents, including the i-Lock system, which together with the circular form enables an energy density up to 30 percent greater than comparable microbatteries on the market.

VARTA will also be demonstrating its rechargeable CoinPower series live at its booth. Among other applications, this model is used in the first wireless in-ear headphones of the hot new startup Bragi. A CoinPower battery also powers the innovative Cosinuss One. This device looks like a wireless earphone, but is actually an in-ear pulse meter that additionally measures heart-rate variability and body temperature. After training, data can be downloaded to a smartphone or smartwatch.
